April 10 is National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day

April 10 is the third observation of National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day (NYHAAD), an opportunity to promote education and raise awareness about the epidemic among young people in the U.S.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-quarter of new HIV infections in the U.S. occur among individuals age 13 to 24 (rising to nearly 40% among those up to age 29). Young gay and bisexual men -- who account for more than 70% of new infections among people under age 25 -- and young black men are disproportionately affected. In fact, young gay men have been the only age group to experience an increase in HIV incidence in recent years.

However, the CDC estimates that approximately 60% of HIV-positive youth do not know their status -- far higher than the 14% of the HIV-positive population as a whole. On NYHAAD, advocates encourage young people to get tested for HIV and if positive, to get linked to care.
