A growing body of evidence indicates that persistent inflammation and immune activation can cause a host of problems for people with HIV. Steven Deeks from the University of California San Francisco gave us a brief summary of HIV-related inflammation at the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012) last week in Washington, DC.

Ongoing inflammation is thought to contribute to many non-AIDS-defining conditions commonly seen in people with HIV as they age, including cardiovascular disease, neurocognitive problems, and malignancies.
Deeks talks with Fred Schaich about the causes, implications, and possible remedies for HIV-related inflammation, as well as how HIV disease and immune dysfunction may manifest different in wealthy and resource-limited areas.
